New figures released under the Freedom of Information Act have shown that schoolgirls as young as 10 are getting
pregnant.
The stats show that since 2002 there have been 15 pregnancies to ten year olds and a staggering 39 to eleven years olds in England and Wales, and the chances are that these figures could be even higher since the number of illegal abortions and miscarriages is unknown.
Britain has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in western Europe and the experts are now saying that the figures show that children are more becoming sexually aware and that girls are bowing to pressure, often from older boys.
- I don’t know about anyone else but this information sends a chill through my bones with my own little girl being 5 this year. This means that potentially she could live her life again and then walk through the door and tell me that she’s pregnant, and then what if history repeated itself and her child did the same – a grandmother at the age of 20!
I would say that it’s inconceivable but clearly it isn’t and the sad thing is that the government are working hard to resolve this situation, obviously without a whole lot of success. What are we doing wrong? Should we be looking to the other European countries to see what they are doing right? Or is this a purely parental issue? – It’s enough to make your head spin!
